The Dollar General Literacy Foundation believes that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to receive a basic education. Created in honor of our co-founder J.L. Turner, who was functionally illiterate, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation provides grants to literacy programs in Dollar General hometown communities. Whether an individual is learning to read, preparing for their high school equivalency or learning the English language, we believe it is never too late to learn!

Personal development has long been a core value among Dollar General employees. In 1999, Cal Turner Sr., co-founder of Dollar General, established the Turner Family Scholarship Fund to benefit his extended family—Dollar General employees.
