Company Culture

Many hands coming together

A rewarding career starts with a rewarding workplace. Appreciate an inspiring, uplifting work environment? We do, too. That’s why we’ve intentionally created a culture that celebrates diversity, empowers the individual and fosters a true team spirit. The truth is we all spend a significant amount of our time working; at Dollar General, it’s time well spent.

Serving Others

Our mission goes beyond being a business

We believe our mission of Serving Others is what got us to where we are today. For over 75 years, we’ve incorporated this simple but vastly important focus into everything we do. You can see it in our tight-knit community of co-workers, who are always ready and willing to help each other through the Dollar General Employee Assistance Foundation. You can see it with our community outreach programs and how we put our customers at the center of everything we do.

Military & Veterans

We salute your dedication.

Integrity. Discipline. Commitment. All of these principles are just some of the reasons why Dollar General values and appreciates your military experience. Whether it’s a challenging leadership role or becoming an integral part of a team, our “Paychecks for Patriots” program makes sure that your skills are matched with the perfect opportunity, so you can find your place at the Dollar General family. We hire roughly 5,000 military veterans a year. But our support goes far beyond that. In an exclusive partnership with Coca-Cola, we recognize and pay tribute to the outstanding military community with our Share a Coke® series. And, we provide ongoing tributes and donations to support the troops. Here are just a few of the ways we’ve been recently recognized:

  • 2018: Top Veteran-Friendly Company by U.S. Veterans Magazine
  • 2018: Recognized by Middle Tennessee State University’s (MTSU) Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Family Center for our strong partnership and support in hiring student veterans
  • 2017: Extraordinary Support Award from Tennessee State Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve for our continued commitment to the employment of National Guard and Reserve service members
  • 2010: Secretary of Defense Freedom Award, the highest civilian award given by the Department of Defense

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation

The Life-Changing Gift of Literacy.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation believes that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to receive a basic education. Created in honor of our co-founder J.L. Turner, who was functionally illiterate, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation provides grants to literacy programs in Dollar General hometown communities. Whether an individual is learning to read, preparing for their high school equivalency or learning the English language, we believe it is never too late to learn!
